The edition size, a signed certificate of authenticity, the condition of the figure and keeping its original box are what collectors look at first. A limited edition is not a guaranteed investment, though: its value depends above all on demand.<\/p><\/aside><div class=\"prose j-body\" data-astro-cid-4cnmyude><p>\u201cLimited edition\u201d, \u201c300 copies\u201d, \u201csigned certificate\u201d\u2026 These words appear on almost every art toy product page. But what do they really mean, and what matters when you start a collection? Here is how to read a limited edition, using our own EQSO figures as an example.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"limited-edition-vs-open-edition\">Limited edition vs open edition<\/h2>\n<p>A <strong>limited edition<\/strong> is produced in a <strong>number of copies set in advance<\/strong>. Once that number is reached, the piece is no longer made. That is what makes it rare.<\/p>\n<p>An <strong>open edition<\/strong>, on the other hand, can be produced for as long as there is demand. That is not a flaw: many figures and blind boxes are open editions. But for an art toy designed as a collectible, the limited run is part of the object\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>The announced figure, the <strong>edition size<\/strong>, is the first thing to look at. For our Series 2, each model, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/dark-light\">Dark Light<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/xtra-red\">Xtra Red<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/purple-fire\">Purple Fire<\/a>, is limited to <strong>300 copies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"numbering-re-release-artists-proof-the-vocabulary\">Numbering, re-release, artist\u2019s proof: the vocabulary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<table><thead><tr><th>Word<\/th><th>What it means<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Edition size<\/strong><\/td><td>The total number of copies produced for an edition<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Numbering<\/strong><\/td><td>The copy\u2019s number within the edition, for example 12\/300<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Re-release<\/strong> (or 2nd edition)<\/td><td>A new production of a piece that has already come out, announced as such<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Artist\u2019s proof<\/strong><\/td><td>A few copies kept by the artist outside the edition, often marked \u201cAP\u201d<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Variant<\/strong><\/td><td>The same character in another colour or finish, with its own edition size<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n<p>The <strong>re-release<\/strong> deserves a word. It is not a problem if it is <strong>clearly announced<\/strong>. Ours was, for Series 1: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/deep-blue\">Deep Blue<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/cherry-lady\">Cherry Lady<\/a> first came out in <strong>50 copies<\/strong>, then in a <strong>second edition of 100<\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/product\/black-skully\">Black Skully<\/a> in <strong>200 copies<\/strong>. All three are now sold out. What matters is that every collector knows how many pieces exist.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-certificate-of-authenticity\">The certificate of authenticity<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>certificate of authenticity<\/strong> is the piece\u2019s ID card. It certifies that it really comes from the artist\u2019s or brand\u2019s studio. A good certificate shows at least:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <strong>artist\u2019s or brand\u2019s name<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>name of the piece<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>edition size<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>signature<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some also add the <strong>copy number<\/strong>, the date or a verification code. Rarity helps, but a piece\u2019s value on the second-hand market depends above all on:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>demand<\/strong> for the artist and the character;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>condition<\/strong> of the figure (no scratches, no fading);<\/li>\n<li><strong>completeness<\/strong>: box, certificate, accessories;<\/li>\n<li><strong>provenance<\/strong>: a piece bought from the creator or an official retailer is easier to resell.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some artist pieces reach crazy prices, like the works of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/blog\/kaws-artist-companion\">KAWS<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popterror.com\/en\/blog\/why-is-labubu-so-popular\">one-off Labubu sold at auction<\/a>. But those are exceptions. Our advice: <strong>buy what you love first<\/strong>, and keep your piece in good condition.
